I. Lý thuyết cách làm phân biệt a little, a few, little, few

1. Phân biệt a few và few

A few và few là hai lượng từ được sử dụng trong câu để làm rõ ý nghĩa về mặt số lượng và sau A few và few là danh từ ĐẾM ĐƯỢC dạng số nhiều. Điểm khác nhau giữa hai từ này là A few thì mang nghĩa tích cực, còn few thì mang nghĩa tiêu cực.

A few + Danh từ đếm được số nhiều: có một chút nhưng đủ để làm gì

Ví dụ:

- Don’t worry. We just have 4 people. I see a few glasses in the cupboard.

Đừng lo. Chúng ta chỉ có 4 người. Tôi thấy một vài cái ly ở trong chạn cốc.

- I have a few old topics to practice for the English speaking exam.

Tôi có một vài đề bài cũ đủ để luyện tập cho kì thi nói tiếng Anh.

Few + Danh từ đếm được số nhiều: có rất ít, không đủ, không như mong đợi (mang tính phủ định)

Ví dụ:

- The teacher feels sad because few students get good results in this examination.

Giáo viên cảm thấy buồn vì rất ít học sinh đạt điểm cao trong kì thi này.

- I have few socks, not enough to wear in a week, I have to wash them everyday.

Tôi chỉ có một ít tất, không đủ để đi trong 1 tuần. Tôi phải giặt chúng hằng ngày.

2. Phân biệt a little và little

A little và little là hai lượng từ được sử dụng trong câu để làm rõ ý nghĩa về mặt số lượng và sau a little và little là danh từ KHÔNG đếm được (luôn ở dạng số ít).

Tương tự a few và few, có “a” là tích cực. Vậy nên a little thì mang nghĩa tích cực, còn little thì mang nghĩa tiêu cực.

A little + danh từ không đếm được: có một chút, đủ để làm gì.

Ví dụ:

- I still have a little time, enough to finish this exercise.

Tôi vẫn còn chút thời gian, đủ để hoàn thành bài tập này.

- Today I can eat a little meat after a long time eating soup due to having a toothache.

Hôm nay tôi có thể ăn chút thịt sau một thời gian dài ăn cháo do đau răng.

Little + danh từ không đếm được: rất ít, không đủ để (mang tính phủ định)

Ví dụ:

- I have little cash, not enough to buy any bus ticket.

Tôi có rất ít tiền mặt, không đủ để mua chiếc vé xe bus nào.

- There is little time left, you will be late for the bus if you come home and return.

Còn lại rất ít thời gian, bạn sẽ muộn chuyến bus nếu bạn về nhà rồi quay lại.

3. Phân biệt a few và few, a little và little

Tổng kết lại thì a few và few dùng với danh từ đếm được, còn a little và little dùng với danh từ không đếm được. Những câu mang nghĩa tích cực: “ít nhưng đủ, ít nhưng may mà có” thì sẽ có thêm “a” ở trước.

- She has few books for reference reading, you can lend her yours.

Cô ấy có rất ít sách để đọc tham khảo, bạn có thể cho cô ấy mượn của bạn.

- I ordered few chairs but there were more people than I expected.

Tôi đã đặt hàng vài chiếc ghế nhưng có nhiều người hơn tôi nghĩ.

- A few people came to his birthday party although it rained too heavily.

Vẫn có một ít người đến dự sinh nhật anh mặc dù mưa rất to.

- They have a few cookies to eat for lunch.

Họ có vài chiếc bánh quy để ăn bữa trưa.

- We only have little butter, not enough to make a cake.
