I. Lý thuyết cách làm Unless

1. Sử dụng trong các loại câu điều kiện

Câu điều kiện loại 1

Ở câu điều kiện loại 1, dùng cấu trúc Unless nhằm thể hiện 1 sự việc có thể xảy ra ở tương lai. Ta có thể dùng cả Unless và If not để thay thế cho nhau.

Cấu trúc:

Unless + S + V (simple present), S + will/can/shall + V

Ví dụ:

- You will fail the Ielts test unless you study hard.

Bạn sẽ không vượt qua được bài thi Ielts trừ khi bạn học tập chăm chỉ.

- You will fail the test if you do not study hard.

Bạn sẽ trượt bài kiểm tra nếu bạn không học tập chăm chỉ.

Câu điều kiện loại 2

Ở câu điều kiện loại 2, cấu trúc Unless được sử dụng nhằm thể hiện một tình huống không thể xảy ra trong hiện tại. Có thể dùng cả Unless và If not thay thế cho nhau.

Cấu trúc:

Unless + S +Ved / V2 (simple past), S+ would + V

Ví dụ:

- He would not be late for the bus unless he forgot his luggage.

-> He would not be late for the bus if he didn’t forget his luggage.

Anh ta sẽ không bị trễ xe bus nếu anh không để quên hành lý.

Câu điều kiện loại 3

Ở câu điều kiện loại 3, cấu trúc với Unless được sử dụng để diễn đạt tình huống đã không xảy ra trong quá khứ. Có thể dùng Unless thay thế cho If not và ngược lại

Cấu trúc:

Unless + S + had + Ved/V3 , S + would + have + Ved/V3

Ví dụ:

- Unless John had walked in the rain yesterday, he would not have been sick.

-> If John had not walk in the rain yesterday, he would not have been sick.

Nếu John không đi bộ dưới cơn mưa vào hôm qua, anh ta đã không bị ốm.

2. Cấu trúc Unless đề xuất một ý kiến

Trong tình huống, ngữ cảnh chúng ta dùng công thức Unless giống như 1 đề xuất hay gợi ý, bạn không được phép sử dụng If… not để thay thế Unless.

Ví dụ:

• I’ll hang out with my family – unless I’m busy.

Tôi sẽ đi chơi với gia đình của tôi trừ khi tôi bận.

• I will play football with Adam – unless He invites me.

Tôi sẽ đi chơi đá bóng với Adam – trừ khi anh ấy mời tôi.

Lưu ý: Hãy thêm dấu “-” khi bạn muốn dùng an afterthought (có nghĩa là suy nghĩ lại).

3. Cấu trúc Unless mang tính cảnh báo

Unless được dùng khi các bạn muốn nhấn mạnh hoặc thúc giục 1 hành động nào đó cần phải được thực hiện ngay lập tức để tránh gây ra hậu quả đáng tiếc.

Trong ngữ cảnh này, bạn có thể dùng If not. Thế nhưng sắc thái biểu đạt sẽ không được bằng Unless.

Ví dụ:

• Unless Susan hurry, she will go to school late.

Nếu Susan không khẩn trương thì cô ấy sẽ bị đến trường muộn.

• Unless she has money, she will buy a car.

Nếu cô ấy có tiền cô ấy sẽ mua một chiếc xe.
