I. Lý thuyết cách làm Mạo từ

- ĐỊNH NGHĨA MẠO TỪ:

Mạo từ là thành phần đứng trước danh từ và cho biết danh từ đó là một danh từ xác định hay danh từ không xác định.

- CÁC LOẠI MẠO TỪ:

Có hai loại mạo từ:

- MẠO TỪ KHÔNG XÁC ĐỊNH hay còn gọi là MẠO TỪ BẤT ĐỊNH (indefinite articles)

- MẠO TỪ XÁC ĐỊNH (definite articles)

1. Mạo từ không xác định: a/ an

+ Mạo từ “a”: đứng trước danh từ đếm được, số ít và danh từ đó phải bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm.

Ví dụ:

- a house (một ngôi nhà) -> Ta thấy “house” là một danh từ đếm được, ở dạng số ít và được bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm “h” nên ta sử dụng mạo từ “a”.

- a student (một học sinh) -> Danh từ “student” là một danh từ đếm được, ở dạng số ít và được bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm “s” nên ta sử dụng mạo từ “a”.

+ Mạo từ “an”: Đứng trước danh từ đếm được số ít và danh từ đó bắt đầu bằng một nguyên âm (a,e,i,o,u).

Ví dụ:

- an apple (một quả táo) -> “apple” là một danh từ đếm được, ở dạng số ít và được bắt đầu bằng một nguyên âm “a” nên ta sử dụng mạo từ “an”.

- an umbrella (một cái ô) -> “umbrella” là một danh từ đếm được, ở dạng số ít và được bắt đầu bằng một nguyên âm “u” nên ta sử dụng mạo từ “an”.

CHÚ Ý:

+ Một số danh từ đếm được, số ít được bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm “h” + nguyên âm, nhưng ta vẫn sử dụng mạo từ “an” đứng trước vì lúc này “h” là một âm câm (không được đọc).

Ví dụ:

- an hour/ ˈaʊə(r)/ (một giờ) -> “hour” bắt đầu bằng “h” + nguyên âm “o” nhưng do “h” không được phát âm nên ta sử dụng mạo từ “an”.

+ Một số danh từ đếm được, số ít được bắt đầu bằng một nguyên âm “u” và “u” được phát âm là “ju” thì ta sử dụng mạo từ “a” chứ không dùng “an’.

Ví dụ:

- a university/ ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/ (một trường đại học) -> “university” là danh từ bắt đầu bằng “u” và “u” được phát âm là “ju” nên ta sử dụng mạo từ “a” đứng trước.

- a union/ ˈjuːniən/ : (một hiệp hội, liên hiệp) -> “union” là danh từ bắt đầu bằng “u” và “u” được phát âm là “ju” nên ta sử dụng mạo từ “a” đứng trước.

*Vị trí và cách sử dụng:

+ Thường đứng trước danh từ đếm được, số ít và đó là một danh từ chỉ chung chung, không xác định (được nhắc đến lần đầu tiên).

Ví dụ:

- I bought a cat yesterday. (Tôi mua một con mèo hôm qua)

Ta thấy “con mèo” trong trường hợp này lần đầu được nhắc đến và người NGHE trước đó không biết đó là con mèo nào nên ta sử dụng mạo từ không xác định.

2. Mạo từ xác định: “the”.

* Đứng trước một danh từ xác định đã được nhắc ở phía trước (người NGHE đã biết được đối tượng mà người nói nhắc đến là gì)

Ví dụ:

- I bought a cat and a dog yesterday. The cat is white and the dog is black. (Hôm qua tôi mua một con mèo và một con chó. Con mèo thì màu trắng và con chó thì màu đen.)

Ta thấy khi nói câu thứ nhất thì người NÓI lần đầu nhắc tới “con mèo” và “con chó”. Lúc này người NGHE chưa biết cụ thể đó là “con mèo” và “con chó” nào nên mạo từ KHÔNG XÁC ĐỊNH “a” được sử dụng trước danh từ “cat” và “dog”. Tuy nhiên, khi nói câu thứ hai thì người NGHE đã xác định được “con mèo” và “con chó” mà người NÓI muốn nhắc tới (là hai con vật mới được mua) nên MẠO TỪ XÁC ĐỊNH “the” được sử dụng trước danh từ “cat” và “dog”.

* Đứng trước một danh từ mà sau danh từ đó có một mệnh đề hay cụm từ theo sau làm rõ nghĩa.

Ví dụ:

- I know the girl who is standing over there. (Tôi biết cô gái mà đang đứng ở đằng kia.)

Ta thấy mệnh đề quan hệ “who is standing over there” là mệnh đề theo sau để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ “girl” nên ta sử dụng mạo từ “the” phía trước danh từ “girl”.

- The man with brown eyes is my husband. (Người đàn ông mà có đôi mắt nâu là chồng của tôi.)

Ta thấy cụm từ “with brown eyes” là cụm từ theo sau để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ “man” nên trước “man” ta cần sử dụng mạo từ “the”.

* Đứng trước các danh từ là chỉ người hoặc vật chỉ có DUY NHẤT.

Ví dụ:

- The earth goes around the sun. (Trái đất quay quanh mặt trời.)

Ta thấy “trái đất” và “mặt trời” đều duy nhất chỉ có một. Vậy nên ta sẽ sử dụng mạo từ xác định “the” đứng trước.

- The president of America is Obama now. (Tổng Thống Mỹ bây giờ là ông Obama.)

Ta thấy một đất nước cũng chỉ có duy nhất một “Tổng thống” vậy nên ta sẽ sử dụng mạo từ xác định “the” đứng trước.

* Đứng trước một tính từ để chỉ một cộng đồng người.

Ví dụ:

- The deaf are not able to hear. (Những người điếc đều không thể nghe.)

Ta thấy “deaf” là tính từ “điếc”.(thường đi sau động từ “to be” hoặc đứng trước danh từ bổ nghĩa cho danh từ.) Khi tính từ này đi sau “the” thì nó sẽ đóng vai trò như là một danh từ và chỉ một nhóm hay một cộng đồng người “điếc”.

- The rich have a lot more money than the poor (Những người giàu có nhiều tiền hơn rất nhiều so với người nghèo.)

Ta thấy “rich” và “poor” là hai tính từ “giàu” và “nghèo”. Khi đi sau “the” thì hai tính từ này sẽ có vai trò như là một danh từ chỉ một nhóm hay một cộng đồng người.

* Đứng trước danh từ riêng chỉ HỌ ở dạng số nhiều để nói đến cả vợ chồng hay cả gia đình.

Ví dụ:

- The Browns are travelling in Vietnam now. (Ông bà Brown (Gia đình ông bà Brown) bây giờ đang du lịch ở Việt Nam.)

Ta thấy “Brown” là một họ khá phổ biến ở Anh. Và khi ta sử dụng ở dạng số nhiều và có “the” phía trước ta hiểu là người nói muốn nhắc đến cả hai “ông bà Brown” hay cả “gia đình nhà Brown”

* Sử dụng trong cấu trúc chỉ địa điểm, nơi chốn, hay phương hướng

Giới từ + the + Danh từ (chỉ địa điểm, phương hướng)

Ví dụ:

- I live in the North of Vietnam. (Tôi sống ở phía Bắc của Việt Nam)

Ta thấy trong câu sử dụng cấu trúc: “in” (giới từ) + the + North (danh từ chỉ phương hướng)

* Sử dụng trước các danh từ chỉ nhạc cụ

Ví dụ:

- My daughter is playing the piano. (Con gái tôi đang chơi đàn piano.)

- My father plays the violin very well. (Bố tôi chơi đàn vi-ô-lông rất giỏi.)

Ta thấy “piano” và “violin” là tên của hai loại nhạc cụ nên ta sử dụng “the” đứng trước chúng.

* Sử dụng trong cấu trúc so sánh hơn nhất

Ví dụ:

- Your sister is the most intelligent girl I’ve ever met. (Em gái bạn là cô gái thông minh nhất mà tôi từng gặp.)

Ta thấy trong câu sử dụng cấu trúc so sánh hơn nhất đối với tính từ dài: the + most + tính từ dài.

3. Các trường hợp không sử dụng mạo từ “a/ an/ the”.

* Với các danh từ riêng chỉ TÊN địa điểm như quốc gia, thành phố, quận, thị xã,..

Ví dụ:

- My sister wants to go to England in the near future. (Em gái tôi muốn tới nước Anh trong tương lai gần)

- I live in Hanoi with my family. (Tôi sống ở Hà Nội với gia đình của tôi)

Ta thấy “England” là tên của một quốc gia, “Hanoi” là tên của một thành phố và trước chúng ta không sử dụng mạo từ.

* Với ngày, tháng, năm

- My son goes to school from Monday to Friday. (Con trai tôi tới trường từ thứ 2 đến thứ 6)

Ta thấy “Monday” và “Tuesday” là hai thứ trong tuần nên ta không sử dụng mạo từ trước chúng.

* Với các môn thể thao

Ví dụ:

- I like playing badminton and football. (Tôi thích chơi cầu lông và bóng đá)

Ta thấy “badminton” và “football” là hai môn thể thao nên ta không sử dụng mạo từ phía trước.

* Trong các cấu trúc:

- at night: vào ban đêm

- at school: ở trường học

- at home: ở nhà

- go to school/ go to market/ go to work: đi học/ đi chợ/ đi làm
