1. I’d keep quiet.

I’d definitely feel guilty for editing the photo, but I’d probably try to justify it to myself—after all, it’s just for fun. Telling the truth might make me feel better, but it would make the whole situation more awkward than it needs to be. I’d just move on and remind myself to be more authentic next time.

2. I’d keep quiet.

I wouldn’t want to embarrass my friend, especially in front of others. I’d let it slide if it’s not that important, but if it keeps happening or seems serious, I might talk to them privately and gently let them know what I noticed. I’d rather preserve our friendship than make a scene.

3. I’d reveal the truth.

If I became a victim of fake sportswear, I wouldn’t stay quiet about it. People should know about these scams! Posting a warning on my social media might save someone else from wasting their money—even if I have to admit I got tricked, which is not a proud thing to say.

4. I’d persuade them.

I wouldn’t stay silent about something I enjoy so much. Traditional radio might seem old-school to them, but it’s got a timeless charm and depth that social media doesn’t. I’d explain why I love it—not to convince them to change their minds, but just to share my perspective. Who knows, they might come around!

5. I’d keep watching TV.

Social media is fast, but TV just feels more professional and trustworthy, especially for sports coverage. Plus, there’s something about the whole experience of watching it live, with commentary and analysis, that I really enjoy. I wouldn’t let the trendiness of social media push me away from what I like.

Dịch:

8 (trang 85 SGK Tiếng Anh 12 Friends Global): SPEAKING Work in groups. Discuss the questions. (Làm việc nhóm. Thảo luận các câu hỏi.)

Traditional media or social media, which one do you think is...

faster?

more accurate?

(Phương tiện truyền thông truyền thống và mạng xã hội, bạn nghĩ cái nào ...

nhanh hơn?

chính xác hơn?)

Gợi ý:

When it comes to speed, social media undoubtedly takes the lead. Platforms like Twitter and Instagram allow users to post updates instantly, spreading news to millions in seconds. For example, during natural disasters or major events, eyewitnesses often report developments before traditional outlets can even mobilize their teams. However, this speed can be a double-edged sword, for it can lead to misleading or fake news, where ill-intentioned users may distort the truth or even photoshop images to fit a certain narrative.

By contrast, accuracy is an advantage of traditional media. Reputable outlets like BBC and The New York Times reveal the truth only after careful fact-checking, offering neutral and informative reporting. For instance, during elections, traditional media outlets are critical of their own biases and aim to avoid being overly provocative or biased in their coverage. On the other hand, social media lets unverified or fake news stories run wild, and users may disguise the truth to draw attention. So while social media can be encouraging for personal expression, its lack of accountability makes it less trustworthy compared to traditional media.

A: That’s great! How about heights? Do they make you nervous?

B: Definitely, my legs tremble at just 2 meters high up! I’m terribly afraid of heights!

A: Wow. What about large crowds? Do you find them intimidating?

B: Yeah, I don’t like being among large crowds either. I tend to feel overwhelmed, I guess it’s because I’m introverted.

A: I see. And what about snakes, spiders, or water? Do any of those scare you?

B: Snakes and spiders definitely give me the creeps, but I’m fine with water.

Dịch:

A: Cá nhân mình rất thích xem phim kinh dị!

A: Ừm, thế còn chuyện kinh dị hay mấy trò đáng sợ ở hội chợ thì sao?

Chúng thân thiện và đem lại cảm giác an ủi nữa.

A: Vậy còn độ cao thì sao? Có làm bạn lo lắng không?

B: Có chứ, chỉ đứng cách mặt đất 2 mét thôi là chân mình run bần bật rồi! Mình sợ độ cao kinh khủng!

A: Chà.

A: Hiểu rồi.

A woman was driving home at night in a remote part of America when she had to stop for petrol. She had to get out of her car because there seemed to be a problem with her banknote. It turned out that there wasn’t a problem, but the attendant wanted her to get out of the car because he had seen a man with an axe in the back of her car.

Nội dung bài nghe:

Ian Right, guys. You all like horror stories, don’t you? I’ve got a great one!

Max A horror story. Great, Ian. They’re so interesting.

Jill Oh shush, Max. Fantastic! How scary is it?

Max Don’t shush me, Jill!

Caro Well, I think I like horror stories …

Ian Don’t worry, Caro. You know what an urban legend is?

Max Of course we do. Anyway, you’re not supposed to say it’s an urban legend. You’re supposed to say ‘this happened to a friend of a friend of mine’ like it was true.

Ian Well, whatever. I’m not saying it isn’t true. It could easily be true.

Caro I hope it isn’t true …

Jill Come on. Let’s just hear it!

Ian OK. I think this story comes from the American Midwest where you drive for miles on open roads without seeing anyone. Well, there was a young woman driving home alone across open country. It was dark and rainy, and it was getting late …

Caro Oh, dear. I don’t like this story already.

Max Oh, yeah. It’s so scary …

Jill I quite like this kind of story …

Ian Guys, I haven’t even started yet! Anyway, she realised that she’d have to stop for petrol soon if she didn’t want to start walking. But there hadn’t been anywhere for miles and miles. But, luckily, she came across a little petrol station a bit further down the road. It was one of those creepy, old-fashioned American petrol stations, the kind with an attendant who comes out to pump the petrol, and something about it made her feel really uncomfortable, and she didn’t want to stop. But she knew that she couldn’t get much further without refuelling, so she reluctantly pulled into the petrol station and asked the attendant to fill up the tank.

Jill I bet the attendant’s a murderer!

Caro Oh, no! She shouldn’t get out of the car.

Ian I’ll continue, shall I? Anyway, the attendant seemed nervous as he filled up her petrol tank, but eventually he finished the job and came over to the driver’s side to get the payment. She gave him a $50 bank note. He examined it

carefully, then told her that it was a forgery. At this point, she wasn’t just uncomfortable, but really scared. The attendant explained that he would have to take her back to his office and call his manager because the forged bank note would have to be reported. Once he had convinced her to come with him, he explained that there wasn’t actually a problem with the money. He’d needed to get her out of the car because there was a man with an axe hiding in the back seat.

Interviewer Good morning and welcome to the programme. Now, we all like a good horror story. Myths and legends have been around since the first humans sat around a campfire and told stories to each other. In the studio today we have an English professor, author and specialist in classical literature by day, who has, out of hours, made it her passion to collect and put on paper as many urban legends as she can. Welcome to the studio, Dr Miriam Webster.

Dr Webster Thank you.

Interviewer Dr Webster, I think I know what an urban legend is …

Dr Webster Well, the strict definition is quite complicated. Urban legends are generally stories that are said to be true and passed from individual to individual, usually orally. They invariably happen to someone other than the storyteller, usually the friend of a friend. Typically, these stories describe humiliating, humorous, terrifying, or supernatural events. Sometimes there’s an implied moral message, like ‘be careful, or the same horrible thing might happen to you!’

Interviewer Yes, urban legends are so delightful, aren’t they? Full of positivity and joy … So, where do we get them from?

Dr Webster Well, they’re a type of folklore – defined as the beliefs, stories and traditions of ordinary people, or ‘folk’ – so one way of differentiating them is by examining where they come from and how they travel. Legends arise spontaneously and can rarely be traced to a single point of origin. And again, they’re usually spread by word-of-mouth and only in rare cases through mass media. Because they end up being repeated by many different people, the stories tend to change over time. So, no two versions of an urban legend are ever exactly alike; there can be as many variations as there are tellers of the tale.

Interviewer Do urban legends ever turn out to be true?

Dr Webster Occasionally they do.

Interviewer But being true disqualifies a story from being an urban legend.

Dr Webster Remember, urban legends aren’t defined as false stories; they’re defined as stories alleged to be true in the absence of actual knowledge or evidence. True or not, as long as a story continues to be passed on as factual by folk who don’t really know the facts, it’s an urban legend.

Interviewer And of course, people will believe anything.

Dr Webster Maybe our brains are hard-wired in some way to be susceptible to well-told stories. It does seem to be the case that we have a built-in tendency to interpret life in narrative terms. Maybe it’s a psychological survival tactic. Perhaps one of the ways we cope is by turning the things that scare us, embarrass us, or make us laugh into stories. We’re charmed by them for the same reasons we’re charmed by Hollywood films: good guys win, bad guys are punished, everything tidied up at the end.

Interviewer And that’s also the end of our programme. Thank you, Dr Webster.

1. What has the man been accused of doing?

2. Can you give examples of similar telephone or internet scams?

Last night, police arrested a man for using social media to obtain people’s phone numbers. Martin Wheeler, 41, had phoned a number of people and apparently convinced them that they had won a free gift. He asked them to provide their financial details. Wheeler has admitted that the free gifts didn’t exist, but has denied that he actually stole any money. He claimed that he’d been trying to raise awareness of the dangers of giving away their details. Police have warned the public never to make personal or financial information available to others unless absolutely certain about the security.

1. What has the man been accused of doing?

The man, Martin Wheeler, has been accused of using social media to obtain people’s phone numbers and then convincing them that they had won a free gift. He would then ask them to provide their financial details.

2. Some examples of similar telephone or internet scams that have been reported by VTV:

- Scammers take control of victims’ Facebook, Zalo, then use them to message the account owner’s family and friends, requesting money transfers under false pretenses.

- Scammers send messages claiming the victim has won a valuable prize but must contribute to a charity fund for the poor or disabled by transferring money to a specified account.

- Scammers post recruitment ads on Facebook to lure victims into becoming sales collabora-tors. Victims are required to spend money in advance to buy products on e-commerce platforms like Shopee or Lazada. Victims are promised payback for their purchases along with a commission. The scammers then:

+ either steal the victim’s upfront payment and cut all contact;

+ or initially pay a small commission to gain the victim’s trust. When larger transactions have been made, the scammers disappear with all the money and block further contact.

Dịch:

+ một là chiếm đoạt luôn số tiền mua hàng của nạn nhân và xóa liên hệ;

It’s all a hoax

Although technology has created an increase in hoax images, the first fake photo dates back to the 1830s. Some years later, a book claimed to show the surface of the moon – even though this wasn’t actually photographed. An obsession with the spirit world led to a series of photos showing ghosts and fairies, and 1960s interest in space travel produced numerous images of alien life. Nowadays, there is plenty of online evidence of our addiction to this visual trickery – there seems to be an endless demand for amusing images of monster cats, mutant squids, and friends posing with Hollywood stars. It can be almost impossible to tell the difference between what’s real and what’s fake.

One of the most amusing hoax images I’ve seen was a photo circulating online of a giant cat that appeared to be the size of a car, sitting in the middle of a city street. The image was incredibly convincing at first glance, but upon closer inspection, you could see that it was digitally manipulated.

As for whether hoaxes are a problem, I think they can be. While some hoax images are harmless and just meant for entertainment purposes, others can spread misinformation or even cause panic. In today’s digital age where information can spread rapidly, it’s important for people to be able to tell fact from fiction. Hoaxes can erode trust in genuine information sources. So, while they may seem harmless on the surface, they can contribute to a broader problem of misinformation and distrust in society.

8 (trang 89 SGK Tiếng Anh 12 Friends Global): SPEAKING Work in pairs. Do you agree to the statement? Creating fake images is illegal. (Làm việc theo cặp. Bạn có đồng ý với ý kiến này không? Tạo hình ảnh giả là bất hợp pháp.)

Gợi ý:

In many cases, creating fake images can be illegal, especially if they are used to deceive or defraud others, infringe upon someone’s rights, or violate intellectual property laws. For example, creating fake images for the purpose of committing fraud, spreading false information, or manipulating evidence in legal proceedings can be considered illegal.

However, there may be contexts where creating fake images is not necessarily illegal, such as in the realm of art or digital manipulation for entertainment purposes, as long as it’s clear that the images are fictional and not presented as real. Additionally, laws regarding the creation of fake images can vary depending on jurisdiction and the specific circumstances of the case.

Overall, while creating fake images can sometimes be illegal, it ultimately depends on the intent and consequences of their creation.

STARS OF THE VLOGOSPHERE

A.

Helicopters circled the sky above Piccadilly Circus as the police officers below struggled to control the thousands of fans on the streets outside the bookstore. Who were the thousands of fans waiting for? That latest pop sensation? No, a ‘vlogger’ – a video blogger.

B.

What makes vloggers so popular? Successful vloggers share some common characteristics. They are outgoing, quick-witted and spontaneous in front of their webcams. There is also a lot of interaction with the audience and feedback on their videos. This means vloggers can adapt the content of their videos to keep their viewers happy. It is material that is made by young people for young people without any intrusion from media corporations. What is more, thanks to the accessibility of modern technology, the vlogs can be watched anywhere at any time. All these ingredients have created a two-way relationship between vloggers and their subscribers, based on shared interests and trust that cannot be found between the providers and users of other media.

C.

However, it appears that those shared interests and that trust might become negatively affected by money. Some of the big-name vloggers can earn up to £20,000 for displaying an advertise-ment on their channel. They also earn a lot for mentioning or reviewing a product in a vlog. About 1,000 vloggers around the world earn at least £100,000 a year from their YouTube income. And profits are sometimes earned at the expense of honesty.

D.

So, will vlogs go the way of many TV programmes and films? Not according to the vloggers, who emphasise their creative independence over making money. However, Zoella, one of the few vloggers in the public eye in Britain, caused a scandal after publishing a book and claiming that it had always been her dream to write a novel. Shortly later, she had to admit that she had not written it alone and her name was just being used to sell it. Many experts saw it as a sign that vlogging had lost its innocence and that large media corporations were taking control.

Đáp án:

1. give reasons for the popularity of vlogs:

NHỮNG NGÔI SAO CỦA THẾ GIỚI VLOG

A.

1. Do people follow vloggers in your country?

2. Who are the most popular vloggers in your country? What makes them popular?

3. Why are the ‘media lives’ of some celebrities so short?

Gợi ý:

1. Do people follow vloggers in your country?

In my country, yes, people do follow vloggers quite actively. Vlogging has become a significant part of internet culture, and many individuals enjoy watching vlogs for entertain-ment, information, or inspiration.

2. Who are the most popular vloggers in your country? What makes them popular?

Well, in my country, one of the most popular vloggers is Khoai Lang Thang. He has gained popularity for his unique content, friendly personality, and consistent interaction with his audience. He covers a wide range of topics, from lifestyle and travel to comedy and education, catering to diverse interests among viewers. My favorite vlog by him is the one that records his travel in India, with many funny remarks.

3. Why are the ‘media lives’ of some celebrities so short?

The media lives of some celebrities might be short due to various reasons. One factor could be the rapid turnover of trends and interests in the entertainment industry. Some celebrities might gain sudden fame but struggle to maintain relevance or sustain their careers over time. In addition, scandals, controversies, or shifts in public opinion can also contribute to the short-lived media lives of certain celebrities.

1 (trang 92 SGK Tiếng Anh 12 Friends Global): SPEAKING Work in pairs. Discuss the questions. (Làm việc theo cặp. Thảo luận các câu hỏi.)

1. Have social media, and modern technology in general, created any new kinds of crime? If so, what are they?

2. Have they created any new ways to fight crime? If so, what are they?

Gợi ý:

1. Yes, social media and modern technology have introduced new types of crime. One example is cyberstalking, where someone uses online platforms to track and harass another person. Another crime is phishing scams, where criminals send fake emails or messages pretending to be trustworthy sources like a bank to steal personal information. In 2020, many people fell victim to phishing schemes related to COVID-19 relief funds, losing significant amounts of money. These crimes are designed specifically for our digital world and wouldn’t have existed before modern technology.

2. Modern technology has also brought innovative ways to combat crime. For example, law enforcement uses social media monitoring to track suspects and gather evidence. Another advancement is the use of facial recognition technology in surveillance cameras. In China, police caught a fugitive attending a large concert because the technology scanned the crowd and matched his face to a database. Similarly, apps like ‘Neighborhood Watch’ let citizens report crimes in real-time, helping authorities respond more quickly.

These tools show how technology can support law enforcement in staying ahead of modern criminals.

BURGLAR LEAVES HIS FACEBOOK PAGE ON VICTIM’S COMPUTER

MARTINSBURG – The popular online social networking site Facebook helped lead to a burglar’s arrest after he stopped to check his account on the victim’s computer, but forgot to log out before leaving her home with two diamond rings.

Fugitive caught after updating his status on Facebook

Maxi Sopo was living the dream of a fugitive abroad, kicking back on the beaches of Cancún by day, partying in the clubs by night. Then he did two things that are never a good idea when you’re on the run from the authorities: he started posting Facebook updates about how much fun he was having – and he added a former Justice Department official to his list of Facebook friends.

- In the first report, Facebook helped catch a criminal by providing evidence of his presence at the crime scene. In the second report, Facebook helped catch a fugitive by providing information about his whereabouts and activities.

- The picture, which shows the sand and the beach that hint at the fun by day of the fugitive, belongs to the second story.

Look at the news reports. Then talk for one minute about how social media can lead to crime and/or be used to fight crime. Think about:

• people posting untrue and/or threatening messages.

• people sharing information about crimes.

• criminals boasting online.

It’s certainly true that social media can cause problems for people – even if they aren’t exactly crimes. So, for instance, somebody might feel very unhappy because a photograph of them is posted online without their permission. It might even get unkind comments – which is a kind of cyber-bullying. I’m not sure if it’s against the law but it certainly causes a lot of unhappiness.

But social media can also be used to fight against crimes, particularly when it comes to sharing information. The kind of thing I’m talking about is when somebody has a bike stolen and puts a message on Facebook or Twitter asking for help. People then share that message online and quite often, it is seen by hundreds or even thousands of people. It often has a positive result. Social media can also help reduce crime in other ways, particularly when it is used by the criminals themselves. One example of that would be when a criminal posts a photo of himself with something that he has stolen. It sounds unbelievable, but actually it happens quite often. I suppose they imagine only their friends will see it, but they’re wrong. These days, the police use social media a lot when they’re trying to solve crimes because it’s such an easy way to look for evidence.

• victims of smartphone theft and/or mugging:

- Many people have experienced the distress of having their smartphones stolen or being mugged in the street in broad daylight. They not only lose their valuable phones but may also suffer from physical harm or emotional trauma. Thieves often target smartphones due to their high resale value, making victims lose money to replace it with a new one.

• using phones to report crime / call for help:

- Victims or witnesses can quickly dial emergency services or use dedicated apps to report crimes, providing important information for law enforcement officers. The ability to make emergency calls from smartphones has saved countless lives by enabling prompt responses from authorities.

1 (trang 93 SGK Tiếng Anh 12 Friends Global): SPEAKING Is the number of people using social networks increasing? Which social network do you think attracts the most users?

- Yes, the number of people on social media is increasing, and the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down. I think the pandemic really accelerated this growth, as people having to stay at home turned to social platforms for connection, entertainment, and work. Even older age groups are embracing it. What’s interesting is how platforms have evolved—adding live streams, stories, shopping features, and even virtual reality options. It’s not just about posting photos anymore; it’s a whole ecosystem of interaction, making it harder to stay offline.

- As for the top dog, from what I see Facebook is still the largest user base, despite younger generations now flocking to other platforms like Instagram too. However, TikTok is the rising star with its short-form video format that has blended entertainment, creativity, and informa-tion in a way that appeals to today’s fast-paced lifestyle. TikTok’s ability to keep users hooked through its algorithm-driven ‘For You’ page is unmatched. So, while Facebook may have more users, TikTok is the one grabbing attention with its addicting content and viral trends.

A. Well-known mathematician

Pierre de Fermat was born on August 17 in 1601 in Beaumont-de-Lomagne, France. He was a famous French mathematician who is often called the founder of the modern theory of numbers. Fermat was one of the two leading mathematicians of the first half of the 17th century (the other was René Descart). Fermat discovered the fundamental principle of analytic geometry. He was also regarded as the inventor of differential calculus, and a co-founder of the theory of probability.

B. Different interests

What strikes as a surprise is that Fermat never considered doing research in Mathematics his job. Although Fermat studied law when he was at college, he developed strong love for foreign languages, literature and mathematics. He read a lot of documents and taught himself in many fields. As early as 1629 Fermat began a lot of research on mathematical theories including algebra and geometry. In 1631 Fermat received the degree in law from the University of Orléans. In 1636, Fermat, the distinguished mathematician, wrote in his copy of the Arithmetica that he had discovered a truly proof of this theorem, but the margin of the book was too small for him to write it down. Andrew Wiles had been interested in Fermat’s last theorem since the age of ten. His years of searching for an answer finally became successful.

Hướng dẫn dịch bài đọc:

A. Nhà toán học nổi tiếng

There could be several reasons why Fermat never saw doing research as his job. One possibility is that during his time, being a mathematician hasn’t really been a recognized or established profession. Instead, many people who we now call mathematicians pursued their mathematical interests as a hobby or side pursuit while working in other professions, such as law, teaching, or government positions.

Another reason could be Fermat’s personal passions. As mentioned in the text, he had a wide range of interests, so it’s possible that Fermat separated his many interests, including mathematics, from his career in law.

Dying for a selfie

Most of us have taken a selfie at one time or another, be it a photo of ourselves in a beautiful place, during a performance by our favourite band, or on a memorable night out with friends. Even monarchs, prime ministers and presidents have been seen in the news grinning inanely at the screen of a smartphone. 1 ______ In several cases, this action has had disastrous consequences.

Take, for example, the Spaniard who was killed by a bull while he was taking a selfie during the annual bull run in a village near his hometown. 2 ______ Incidents such as these led to the death toll from selfie-related incidents reaching double figures for the first time in 2015, overtaking the number of victims of shark attacks. Most of the cases involve people taking selfies while posing with animals, or falling from high places.

Despite the risks, social media is full of pictures featuring near misses that could have been fatal under other circumstances. Under the caption ‘Most dangerous selfie ever’, a woman posing at a stadium can be seen narrowly avoiding being hit in the head by a baseball approaching her. 3 ______ What is even more worrying, however, is that the woman herself dares others to better the shot, seemingly overlooking the fact that by doing so, she is endangering the lives of her ‘friends’ as well.

In response to the increasing threat posed by the selfie, the authorities have started to take action. National parks, such as the Waterton Canyon in Denver, Colorado, have closed their gates to visitors who have been getting too close to the bears to get them in the photo. 4 ______ But if instructions like these are really necessary, then perhaps it is about time we asked ourselves which is more important, a ‘like’ or a life?

A. Or the Singaporean tourist who died when he fell from cliffs on the coast of Bali.

B. The alternative to taking unnecessary risks is to use Photoshop to create outrageous pictures.

C. The Russian Interior Ministry has launched a public education campaign advising selfie-takers against balancing on dangerous surfaces or posing with their pets, among other things.

D. But today, more and more people are putting their lives at risk in an attempt to get the most shocking picture to share on social media.

E. Yet the photo has received thousands of ‘likes’, and the comments below it suggest that this behaviour is something to be admired.

1But today, more and more people are putting their lives at risk in an attempt to get the most shocking picture to share on social media. In several cases, this action has had disastrous consequences.

Take, for example, the Spaniard who was killed by a bull while he was taking a selfie during the annual bull run in a village near his hometown. 2Or the Singaporean tourist who died when he fell from cliffs on the coast of Bali. Incidents such as these led to the death toll from selfie-related incidents reaching double figures for the first time in 2015, overtaking the number of victims of shark attacks.

3Yet the photo has received thousands of ‘likes’, and the comments below it suggest that this behaviour is something to be admired. What is even more worrying, however, is that the woman herself dares others to better the shot, seemingly overlooking the fact that by doing so, she is endangering the lives of her ‘friends’ as well.

In response to the increasing threat posed by the selfie, the authorities have started to take action. National parks, such as the Waterton Canyon in Denver, Colorado, have closed their gates to visitors who have been getting too close to the bears to get them in the photo. 4The Russian Interior Ministry has launched a public education campaign advising selfie-takers against balancing on dangerous surfaces or posing with their pets, among other things. But if instructions like these are really necessary, then perhaps it is about time we asked ourselves which is more important, a ‘like’ or a life?

1. What are the advantages of blogs or vlogs over traditional diaries?

2. What makes a traditional diary still attractive to young people?

Gợi ý:

1. Blogs and vlogs offer some significant advantages over traditional diaries, particularly in terms of reach and interaction. Unlike handwritten diaries, blogs can be shared with anyone, anywhere, instantly. This makes them perfect for people who want to share their thoughts or experiences with a wider audience. For instance, a travel blogger can share their journey in real time, including photos, videos, and advice, reaching people across the globe. Vlogs, especially on platforms like YouTube, take this a step further by allowing the creator to engage with viewers directly through comments, live streams, and feedback.

Moreover, blogs and vlogs offer multimedia integration—you can combine text, images, audio, and video, making them far more dynamic than a traditional diary. This is a huge plus for people who are visually inclined or enjoy storytelling through multiple formats. Also, with blogs, there’s the potential for monetization—something traditional diaries can’t provide. Bloggers and vloggers can partner with brands, promote products, or use affiliate marketing to make money from their content.

2. Despite the digital age, traditional diaries still have a unique appeal, especially for young people. One major reason is the sense of personal connection and privacy they offer. In a world where everything feels public online, a diary provides a space where thoughts can be completely private and unfiltered. Writing by hand in a notebook has also been shown to improve memory retention and creative thinking, making it a therapeutic and reflective practice.

For many, journaling is a way to process emotions, track personal growth, or simply unwind. It offers a moment of quiet away from the noise of social media. There’s also the element of nostalgia—physical diaries hold a certain charm, almost like a time capsule. Looking back at old entries provides a personal record of one’s past that digital logs can’t quite replicate. The tactile feel of writing with pen and paper, combined with the intimate nature of diaries, keeps them relevant even in a high-tech world.

7.1 Changes in reported speech

(Những thay đổi trong câu tường thuật)

Tense changes

→ She’ll say she prefers playing basketball.

→ She’s said she prefers playing basketball.

b we are reporting a past perfect verb, would, could, should or had better.

‘We should leave.’

→ She said that we should leave.

• Many modal verbs are usually unchanged after past reporting verbs.

‘I might be late.’

→ He said that he might be late.

• We often omit the word that form the beginning of the reported speech clause.

They said it was too expensive.

• There are often changes in words which refer to the people, time or place. These are dictated more by logic than by rules.

‘I’ll be here tomorrow.’ she said.

→ She says she’ll be here tomorrow.

(reported on the same day, in the same place)

→ She say she’ll be there tomorrow.

(reported on the same day, in a different place)

‘Is it snowing? she asked.

→ She asked if it was snowing.

‘Do you live in Bristol? she asked me.

→ She asked me whether I lived in Bristol.

• We do not include question tags in reported questions.

‘You’re Mia’s friend, aren’t you?’ he asked.

• When we report short answer, we use the auxiliary or modal verb from the short answer.

Do you know the time? ‘I don’t.’

→ He asked me if I knew the time and I said I didn’t.

7.3 Reporting verbs

(Động từ tường thuật)

We can report statements using say or tell or other reporting verbs.

say and tell

• The object of the verb say is always what was said. It is often a clause.

‘It’s late,’ said Tom.

She said she was thirsty.

• If I want to mention the person who is addressed, we must use the preposition to.

‘I’m going now.’ she said to her friend.

• The object of the verb tell is usually the person who is addressed. We do not use the preposition to.

Have you told your mum?

He told me he was tired.

• We also use tell in set phrases like tell a lie, tell the truth, tell a story, etc.

Other reporting verbs

We can use other verbs instead of say and tell when we report statements, e.g. add, admit, agree, argue, boast, claim, complain, confess, confirm, deny, explain, insist, observe, predict, promise, reply, reveal, swear, warn.

‘This bread is stale.’

→ He complained that his bread was stale.

‘It’ll definitely be crowded in town.’

→ He predicted that it would be crowded in town.
