    The line graph compares and contrasts the proportion of residents living in the rural and urban areas in Thailand over the period of 60 years, between 1960 and 2020.

    Overall, more people emigrated from villages to cities during the period. Having looked at the provided chart for more details, it is apparent that the urban population rate has been increasing whilethe one in the rural areas saw the opposite trend. Particularly, in 1960, 20% of inhabitants lived in towns which was a quarter of the population settled down in villages. Two decades later, the city witnessed an increase of 7% in its population, by contrast, the countryside experienced a decrease with the same percentage.

    Moreover, in 2010, many farmers moved to urban areas which made the rate of this area rise from 27% to 44%. Consequently, the countryside's rate in the same year declined from nearly three-fourths to over a half. In 2020, the figure for the city took over the one for the rural and stood at over half which was higher than the percentage of the rural by 4%.

    In 1960, 80 per cent of Thai people lived in rural areas. However, the percentage of rural population fell slightly to 73 per cent in 1980 and 68 per cent in 2000. From 2000, the proportion of the population living in rural areas continued to decrease gradually. In 2020, the rural population was only 48 per cent of the total population of Thailand.

    By contrast, the urban population rose throughout the same period. In 1960, the percentage of city population was just around 20 per cent. The figure went up slightly to 27 per cent in 1980. It had increased by another five per cent in 2000, when 32 per cent of the population lived in urban areas. Since 2000, the proportion of the urban population has continued to increase gradually and in 2020, it reached 52 per cent of the total population.
