Lesson One - Words / Part 1 (page 88)

A. DESIRED OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Identify common school things.

- Understand a short story.

WARM-UP/REVIEW (5 minutes)

Aim: To motivate students and help students to review the previous words.

*Game: “Think the words from the letters”

- Write the word CLASSROOM in large letters across the top of the board.

- Ask students to shout out English words that begin with each letter and write them vertically down the board, e.g. C could be cat, L could be lion, A could be apple, etc.

- When the teacher has thought of a word for each letter, ask the students to repeat the activity in small groups. The teacher can use a different word, for example ENGLISH, and see if the students can think of a word for every letter.

- Praise students if they have done well.

- Task completed with excellence: Students can say the words nicely.

- Task completed: Students can say the words.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to say the words.

- Look at the word CLASSROOM.

- Shout out English words that begin with each letter and write them vertically down the board.

- Repeat the activity in small groups.

PRESENTATION (10 minutes)

Aim: To help students identify common school things and pronounce the words correctly.

*Lead-in: Use Flashcards 126-129 to present the vocabulary.

- Use flashcards to present the vocabulary. Hold up each flashcard and say the word for students to repeat. Ask students to point to real objects in the classroom if possible.

- Hold the flashcards up in a different order and repeat.

- Remark on students’ pronunciation.

- Task completed with excellence: Students can pronounce the phrases correctly and fluently.

- Task completed: Students can pronounce the phrases.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to pronounce the phrases.

*Listen and point. Repeat. (Track 141)

- Point to the pictures. Say the words and let students repeat.

- Play the recording. Have students point to the correct words.

- Play the recording again. Ask students to repeat each word after they hear it.

- Ask some students to read the words aloud.

- Check students’ pronunciation.

PRACTICE (8 minutes)

Aim: To help students remember common school things and improve students’ pronunciation skills.

*Listen and chant. (Track 142)

- Play the recording for students to listen once through.

- Play the chant a second time for students to say the words.

- Repeat more than once if necessary.

- Call two groups/students to say the chant for the class. The rest of the class claps along to the rhythm of the chant.

- Praise students if they have done well.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to say the chant.

- Listen to the chant.

- Listen to the chant again. Say the words.

PRODUCTION (10 minutes)

Aim: To help students identify common school things and improve students’ integrated skills.

*Game:Whisper”

Flashcards (table, computer, chair, board)

- Introduce the game.

- Organize students in groups of at least six. Show a flashcard to the first student in each group. This student whispers the word to the student next to him/her.

- Have students continue whispering the word to the student next to them until the word reaches the final child.

- The final student says the word out loud, and the first student holds up the flashcard to see whether the word and the flashcard are the same.

- Praise the winner.

- Task completed with excellence: Students can say the words correctly.

- Task completed: Students can say the words.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to say the words.

- Listen to the teacher.

- Work in groups. The first student in each group looks at the flashcard. This student whispers the word to the student next to him/her.

- Continue whispering the phrase to the student next to them until the phrase reaches the final student.

- The final student says the phrase out loud, and the first student holds up the flashcard to see whether the phrase and the flashcard are the same.

HOMEWORK (2 minutes)

- Learn new words by heart.

- Do the exercises in Workbook page 82.

- Prepare for the next lesson (Unit 12 - Lesson 1/Part 2).
