In an early survey conducted in 1888, a billion and a half people inhabited the earth. Now, the population is about six billion and is growing fast. Even though the rate of growth has begun to slow down, most people believe the population size may be eight billion during the next several years.

If we examine the amount of land available for this ever increasing population, we begin to see the problem. Not all land is useful to us because it cannot produce food. We can cut out about one fifth of it because it is covered by snow and ice. Then we can cut out another fifth because it is desert. Another fifth is mountains. The other fifth does not have enough soil for crops to grow because it is bare rock.

If you didn’t use a postcode, it’s no good complaining that your letter should have arrived sooner. Parcels are a problem because they must be correctly packaged. If Aunt Sophie is going to send you a jar of your favourite jam, she will have to wrap it up well. The most important thing we have to do is to address our letters and parcels clearly and correctly. This means clear handwriting and correct spelling. What we should do and what we actually do often miles apart. Recently, the Post Office had to deliver a letter which showed a name followed by the word Arijaba. What is this, do you think? Say it out loud and you’ll see it’s just plain English: HARWICH HARBOUR!

You have probably heard about the unappealing dried foods that astronauts eat in space, such as the chalky ice cream and powdered pea soup. That means all the water is removed from those foods. But did you know that there are more than 90 different food and drink items on NASA's space menu? (NASA is the American goverment organization concemed with spacecraft and space travel. NASA is an abbreviation for National Aeronautics and Space Administration.)

Many food items are dehydrated to prevent bacteria growing, so water must be added before consumption. But some foods look like those ready meals you find in the supermarkets, made hot in the microwave. In fact, the chefs have recently provided some gorgeous meals for the space crew. Astronauts choose their individual food selections on Earth, getting to taste it all first beforehand.

Drinking is another matter. Although much is brought up with the astronauts and in cargo deliveries, a lot is recycled from human waste water. Yes, the water they use could have been someone else's urine a day ago. You cannot be squeamish if you are an astronaut!
