In the past, people wrote with feather pens and then used pens with metal points. They had to dip the point into ink after every few letters. Next, someone invented a fountain pen that could hold ink inside it. A fountain pen could write several pages before you have to fill it again.
Later, two Hungarian brothers, László and Gyõrgy Biró, invented the ballpoint pen that we all use today. They presented their pen at the Budapest International Fair in 1931 and patented it in 1938. In 1941, the Biro brothers and a friend, Juan Jorge Meyne, fled to Argentina. Then, they filed a new patent there in 1943. Their pens were sold in Argentina under the name Birome (which comes from Biró and Meyne). During World War II, English pilots liked Biró ballpoint pens. They couldn’t write with fountain pens in airplanes because Ink leaked out. Later, a French company bought the patent from Biró for the ballpoint pen in 1950.
